Students Win State Video Award
VIERA—Congratulations go to the
students and teachers at South Lake Elementary
School for winning the state video contest
promoted as part of Celebrate Literacy Week.
Under the instruction of South Lake library
media specialist Jim Betz, a team of sixth grade
students created the award-winning public
service announcement to encourage students to
read. The video was created by five students in
the sixth grade that also created the puppets
and backdrops. Students Megan Grey, Julia
Rivera-Whalen, Destiny Cook, and Melinda
Starling placed the figures for the video,
photographed them for animation, and handled the
editing, including synching the characters’
mouths to the soundtrack. To expand the school
involvement, a second grade class created the
song through a brainstorming session. First
grade teacher, Loura Dandridge, sang the song
with three fourth graders, Rebecca Thomlinson,
Alexis DeJoy, and Kristen Ellenberg who served
as back-up singers.
The school was recognized in
Tallahassee at a kick-off ceremony on January 25
with the Lt. Governor, Jeff Kottkamp, for
Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida. The goal is
to show both student and adults the joy of
reading. A variety of activities promoting
reading in our schools will take place this week
in recognition of Celebrate Literacy Week.
